Prerequisites: It is recommended to have followed the biology courses.
Target skills and knowledge: The adaptive strategies carried out by animal organisms in response to particular environmental conditions, according to mechanistic, ecological, behavioral and evolutionary perspectives.
Examination methods: Oral
Assessment criteria: Ability to do links and reasoning, using a correct scientific language, mastery of the discipline from a conceptual point and understanding.
Course unit contents: It will put in evidence: the mechanisms by which the animals perform vital functions; the evolution and the adaptive significance of physiological characters; the way in which different groups of animals differ and resemble; the mode of interaction between ecology and physiology, present and evolutive.
Physiological adaptations will be considered as a whole that allow survival: water and energy balance, temperature, osmoregulation, excretion, respiration and circulation. Organisms adapted to environments will be studied: aquatic (fresh and sea water, coasts and estuaries) and terrestrial (including extreme habitats). The responses of organisms to anthropogenic stimuli will be also considered. The human activities in extreme conditions will study. Altitude: immediate effects and long term induced by hypoxia. Acclimatization dive. Adaptations to low and high pressures. Effects of extreme temperatures and "global change".
Responses of organisms to pollution conditions. Essential and non-essential elements. Pollutants and toxicity. Assumption, metabolism, detoxification responses and toxicity mechanisms of metals and their compounds: general aspects. Specific aspects of detoxification and toxicity for: Cd, Cu, Zn, As, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sn. Cellular and molecular biomarkers.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lessons with PowerPoint presentations and interactions using stimulus questions with students.
Studied by the students of a particular topic by reading a scientific paper and its subsequent presentation and discussion.
Laboratory activities for the assay of chelating molecules and determination of antioxidant enzymes activity.
