Prerequisites: General and inorganic chemistry, Biology, Agriculture and environment
Target skills and knowledge: Know the physico-chemical, partives and ecotoxicological characteristics of pesticides and their environmental fate, 2) evaluate the environmental risk associated to their use;
illustrate the mitigation measures.
Examination methods: Written test with open questions and numeric execises
Assessment criteria: Knowledge of the subject; clear exposition of the subject; correct scientific speech
Course unit contents: 1 CFU- Introduction to the course: pesticide definition, pesticide story, pesticides classification. Field of application (agriculture, urban areas, health sector…). Environmental fate of pesticides.

2 CFU- Pesticide properties
a) Chimico-pysical properties: Molecular Weight (PM), Solubility in water (S);Vapor pressure (VP); Ionization constant (pKa);
b) Partition coefficient: Henry constant (H); Air-water partition coefficient (Kaw); Distribution coefficient (Kd); soil organic carbon sorption coefficient (Koc) ; n-Octanol/Water Partition Coefficient (Kow); Octanol−Air Partition Coefficients (KOA), Bioconcentration factor (BCF)
c) Half –life(T50) and Dissipation time (DT50; Dt90).
d) Toxicological endpoints: Acute toxicity (LD50, LC50, ED50), Chronic toxicity (NOEL, NOAEL, LOEL, ADI, ARfD).

a)Hazard identification; Effects assessment; Exposure assessment; risk characterization; calculation of Toxicology Exposure Ratio (TER)
b) Human exposure to pesticides: AOEL, Acceptable Operator Exposure Level, TMDI, Theoretical Maximum Daily Intake, NEDI, National Estimated Daily Intake, IESTI, International Estimated Short Term Intake
c) Pesticide toxicity and exposure to aquatic organisms; Calculation of PNEC (Predicted No Effect Concentration). Pesticide mixture toxicity and its effects on aquatic biota.

c) Integrated systems of classification

1 CFU- Vulnerability of Groundwater to Pesticide Contamination, SINTACS model, measures of leaching mitigation. Case study: the contamination of the aquifer north of Vicenza

1 CFU - Non point source pollution: mitigation measures of runoff and drift. Point source pollution: use of biobed. Management and communication of the risk. Directive EU 128 and National Action Plan (PAN)
