Syllabus
Prerequisites: Knowledge of fundamental psychological mechanisms and of language mechanisms. A basic knowledge can be acquired wih the following reading: -Eysenck, M.W. e Keane, M.T. (2005). Psicologia Cognitiva. Idelson-Gnocchi, Napoli, chapters 9-11.
Target skills and knowledge: Students are expected to demonstrate
-knowledge of the basic facts of language and communication as a subject to be studied
-better understanding of the nature of scientific inquiry in asking questions about language, its nature and how language is used.
-develop an analytic and critical approach
- develop their oral and written communication skills with an anlytical and critical approach towards subjects treated in the textbook and in the group discussions proposed (forum).
Examination methods: The exam will be a written multiple choice responses. THere will be 35 questions for students who cannot attend regularly, each correct response receives a mark of 1 point, and each point is summed to obtain the final mark.
Students who attend regularly will have to actively participate to forums, quiz and other tasks and their performance will obtains scores up to 10 points that will be added to the scores obtained in the multiple choice exam, that will be formed by 25 questions.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will be based on the verification of the understanding of the main topics presented and discussed during the course and in the textbook. Students of this course are expected to demonstrate critical thinking in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of information in the scientific literature to distinguish the scientific literature from other sources. They are also expected to demonstrate knowledge of major psychological concepts, theories, and empirical findings
Course unit contents: Basic topics of the psychology of language will be considered: processes involved in understanding what is heard, or read, and the way in which people express their thoughts in words and sentences; the acquisition of the linguistic ability, linguistic deficits due to congenital or acquired diseases, and finally biological foundations of language and its origins. FInally non verbal communication and pathologies of communication will be studied.
THe precise contents vary depndeing on whether the students iattending or no, and will be detailed in the COntratto formativo that will be presented at the beginning of the course (see also Eventuali indicazioni sui materiali di studio).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Students are allowed to choose whether to participate and attend regularly to the course during the semester in which it is activated. Home work will be proposed under the form of open questions. Students are required to complete the assignments in order to be able to participate to the final exam. THey will study only part of the textbook, in addition to the other materials. Activities will be evaluated and scores will be combined with the scores to the written exam.
Alternatively, students can prepare for the exam only on the textbook.

For those who attend during the semester, materials will be presented on line. They will also prepare for the exam on chapters 3, 4, 5 of the textbook: Animal communication, Language, Non verbal communication.
