Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic notions of social psychology, developmental psychology, history of psychology, cultural anthropology, sociology, research methods in social psychology.
Target skills and knowledge: Aim of the course is to offer instruments for social psychological analyses from various theoretical and methodological perspectives. The program will enhance central and debated issues in social psychology: knowledge of the social world; primacy of relationship, communication, narrative; representations of the social world; constructing, negotiating, challenging social knowledge (processes of social knowledge and change). Focus will be given to developments in contemporary social psychology that underline social and cultural dimensions.
Examination methods: Oral, with a written paper sent in advance.
At least five days prior to the exam, students will present a paper. They are invited to choose a research article, published in a prestigious scientific journal, employing a socio-constructivist/constructionist or cultural/narrative perspective among those encountered within the course. The paper will include a resume, comment and discussion of the research article with links to main themes treated during the course.

Assessment criteria: The evaluation will be based on students’ theoretical and methodological knowledge supported by frequent examples of research. The ability to apply and discuss concepts and methods autonomously will be positively evaluated.
Course unit contents: Brief historical introduction. Ancestors and founders.
The psycho-social interconnection: individuals, relations, cultures in the study of social issues.
Theorical models and research methods in the study of social representations.
Socio-constructivism and socio-constructionism in action. Notes on narrative and cultural psychology.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is organised in lectures and tutorials. Lectures will mostly focus on theoretical aspects, with frequent examples of research. Active and critical participation by students is promoted.
