Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of general psychology, social psychology and research methodology in social science.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide the theoretical bases and empirical methods of data collection through questionnaires and interviews.
Examination methods: Written exam: 3-4 open questions on very specific topics. For international students, it is possible to take the exam in English.
Assessment criteria: Students will be evaluated for their acquired knowledge and the ability to understand and use development and implementation of survey in different contexts.
Course unit contents: Introduction: questionnaire and interviews; why ask questions to people.
Questions: research types and data collection modalities; research design, research “ingredients”, data quality. Research aims, constraints, research variables.
The process of answering questions. Types of questions; phrasing; answer errors.
Constructing the measurement instrument; variables to consider. Biases and contextual effects in questions and in answer categories, and in data quality.
Training and supervising interviewers.
Research phases: sampling; collecting, coding and analysing data
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Topics are dealt with both in their general, theoretical aspects, and with examples from research. The texts for the exam will offer students the opportunity to revise and enlarge their knowledge on the dealt with topics. Some classroom time will be devoted to practical exercises on various topics – research planning, question phrasing, choosing an answer modality, etc.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The manual by Zammuner, V.L. (1998). “Tecniche dell'intervista e del questionario”. Il Mulino, Bologna, needs to be studied with great attention.
The book by Zammuner, V.L. (2003). “Il focus group”. Il Mulino, Bologna, has to be read (reading Chap. 2, pp. 77-103, is optional), but the student does not need to have a knowledge of it as 'precise' as is required for “Tecniche dell intervista e del questionario”.
