Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of molecular biology is required.
Target skills and knowledge: 1) Acquisition of the basic principles and knowledge of classical and molecular genetics in order to understand the main transmission mechanisms of hereditary traits.
2) Acquisition of basic knowledge on the structure and functioning of genes and their interactions
3) Acquisition of knowledge about the influence of genetic factors on some traits of behavior in the human species
Examination methods: Written.
The exam includes:
1) 3 exercises, aimed at evaluating the ability to solve classical genetic problems.
2) 13 questions with multiple choice
3) 4 open questions, aimed at evaluating the ability to present genetic topics, with particular attention to the use of exact terminologies, definitions and concepts.
Assessment criteria: The result will be evaluated based on the answers that will bring out the understanding and learning of the topics covered, the use of appropriate scientific terms and the ability to link different concepts.
Course unit contents: The information of life: DNA contains the genetic information; replication and transcription of DNA; RNA and protein synthesis; the genetic code.
Cellular organization of genetic information: genes and genomes.
Mendel's laws; autosomal and sex-linked traits; complex or multifactorial characters.
The molecular basis of genetic variability: meiotic recombination and crossing-over; mutations.
Using family trees as tools to determine the mode of transmission of monogenic (autosomal and X-linked) and the definition of probability.
Examples of mutant alleles responsible for hereditary diseases and molecular research tools.
Relationships between genetics and environment in determining behavior; Genetic analysis of normal and pathological behavior in humans.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: 1) Lectures
2) Journal club, in which topics concerning genetic influence on some aspects of human behavior will be explored
3) Classroom exercises, dedicated to the study of human pedigrees and the the solving of formal genetics problems
