Knowledge about the forms of organization of the perceptual field and differences with respect to the physical world. Methods of analysis of photographic and pictorial images as communication tools.
Examination methods: Assessment by written exam (open questions). The proposed questions are ten, the student will have two hours to respond. The exam can be passed if the student is able to respond to at least five of these.
Assessment criteria: Completeness of the preparation, clarity of exposure. The accuracy of the notions is the object of the assessment as much as the appropriateness of the argumentation. The candidate must commit himself/herself to correctly exposing both methodological and theoretical problems.
Course unit contents: This course offers a view on the experimental methods and on the issues related to visual perception.

In particular, it will cover the following aspects:

Historical background
Sensation and perception
The perceptual world
Perceptual constancies
Depth perception
Motion perception
Cognitive processes in perception
Visual communication

Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures will be integrated with laboratory observations and, as far as possible, with practical exercises and in-the-field exercises. The application of methods already learned by students will be stimulated, such as: semantic differential, statistical comparison of means, short and long-term memory, eyewitness testimony. In this case, the aim is to integrate acquired and to-be-acquired knowledge and this in observance of the psychologist's investigation object, which must be recomposed in a vision that is as unified as possible.

1. Purghé, Stucchi, Olivero "La percezione visiva". Torino: Utet Università, 1999.
