Syllabus
Prerequisites: Knowledge of basic notions of physics, mathematics and general biology are required, as specified in the enrolling requirements of the School of Psychology.

Specifically, adequate knowledge is required of notions of cell biology, genetics and human physiology. For those students who do not have a strong preparation in Biology, such notions can be gained by attending, during the first semester, the course of Applied Biology (taught in Italian).
Target skills and knowledge: This course will provide students with the fundamental knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, to the aim of understanding the psychobiology of mental processes.
The course is an introductory one, though it is aimed at providing notions which are as much as possible accurate and updated.
Examination methods: Upon request to the professor, the written exam can be taken by the students also in English language.

The written exam consists in a series of questions (open questions, multiple choice questions, or anatomy tables/illustrations to denominate). Students are required to answer to all questions in about 45-60 mins.

The minimum mark required to pass the exam is 18 out of 30.
Assessment criteria: The following will be assessed and evaluated in the exam :
- the understanding of physiological mechanisms and processes,
- the knowledge of anatomy,
- the appropriate use of terminology.
Course unit contents: Anatomy and physiology of the neuron, the action potential, synaptic transmission, neural circuitry,
Elements of psychopharmacology,
Anatomy of the central and peripheral nervous system, the autonomic nervous system,
Hormones and endocrine system,
Sensory apparata and processing of sensory information.
Psychobiology of learning and memory (the cellular mechanisms).
Basic mechanisms of synaptic plasticity.
