Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge in biology, chemistry, and biochemistry
Target skills and knowledge: After completing the course the student will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
Clinical biochemistry and clinical molecular biology.
Techniques of Pharmacology and Toxicology: fundamental concepts of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics and main applications of pharmacology and experimental toxicology, with special reference to the techniques used in TDM and preclinical and clinical trials of drugs.
Medicine techniques laboratory and automation, with particular reference to the innovative techniques of molecular diagnostics.
Examination methods: The exam consists of tests with open and multiple choice questions or an oral exam.
Assessment criteria: Level of knowledge on the topics of the course.
Course unit contents: Clinical biochemistry and clinical molecular biology:
The various stages of a laboratory analysis: pre-analytical, intra-analytical and post-analytical: guidelines, methods of control, quality control, analysis of results; evaluation of the accuracy, precision analytical, internal controls and external quality, total analytical error; reference intervals, threshold, sensitivity and diagnostic specificity, positive and negative predictive value, critical difference. Diagnostic applications: serum proteins, enzymes, tumor markers.

Medicine techniques and laboratory automation:
Principles and techniques of molecular diagnostics; techniques of nucleic acid amplification, nucleic acid hybridization techniques, nucleic acids sequencing techniques, diagnostic applications of molecular techniques.
Next generation sequencing technologies and their diagnostic applications.
Organization of clinical laboratory
Instrumentation, automation, robotics
The computer in the clinical laboratory

Techniques of pharmacology and toxicology:
Pharmacology: pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics
Relations between pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
Routes of administration of drugs
Bioavailability and absorption
Steady state, peak, and downstream concentrations
Interval (range) and therapeutic index
Definitions of TDM
TDM: major directions
Examples of drugs that may require a therapeutic monitoring
