Prerequisites: Knowledge of Human Anatomy and Physiology is recommended.
Target skills and knowledge: At the end of the course the student will qcquire:

1. KNOWLEDGE of the diseases that frequently involve the patients referred to the Units of Internal Medicine.

2. KNOWLEDGE of the terms that define signs and symptoms complained by the patients who will be examined by the students (and future nurses);

3. ABILITY of linking signs and symptoms to the diseases;

4. SKILFULL in clinical reasoning mostly to identify urgencies and emergencies.
Examination methods: Knowledge and abilities will be assessed via a written test (8 multiple choice questions and 2 open questions). Some questions will be aimed at assessing the ability of discerning the urgencies and emergencies within a series of pathological conditions.

The tests will last 60 minutes.
Assessment criteria: The criteria that will be used to evaluate knowledge and abilities are:

1. Appropriateness of the mediacal terms;
2. Quality of the knowledge;
3. Ability in assessing severity of clinical signs and symptoms.
Course unit contents: Lungs (Pneumonia, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pleuritis).

Blood diseases (Haematopoiesis. Anaemia and polycythemia. Myelo- and lymphoproliferative diseases. Limphoadenopathies. Hemostasis and thrombosis).

principleas of immunopathology and immune-mediated diseases.

Endocrine and metabolic diseases (Diseases of thyroid, parathyroids, adrenal glands). Diabetes mellitus. Bone diseases.

Diseases of kidneys and urinary tract (Glomerulonephritis, interstitial kidney disease and pyelonephritis, stones). Acute and chronic kidney insufficiency(.

Cardiovascular risk factors (Arterial hypertension; obesity; Dyslipidaemias).

cardiovascular diseases (Arteriosclerosis; valvular diseases; ischaemic disease; heart failure; arrhythmias; endocarditis; pericarditis).

Gastroenterology (Gastritis and enteritis; liver diseases; bile duct and stone diseases; pancreatitis).

Infectious diseases.

Signs and symptoms relevant for the Internal Medicine (Fever; dyspnoea; pain).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teaching activities will consist mainly of lectures.

1. The contents of the lectures will be availble through powerpoint slides.

2. Questions from the students will be favored to assess students' comprehension.

3. An open discussion will be promoted.
