Prerequisites: None.
Target skills and knowledge: The student will learn the basic physical principles exploited in biomedical instrumentation and will study the technological realizations of the main biomedical instruments.
Examination methods: Written test.
Assessment criteria: Student evaluation will be based on the understanding of the topics of lectures, on the acquisition of the main concepts and methodologies proposed and on the ability to apply them in an independent and informed way.
Course unit contents: Introduction to diagnostic biomedical instrumentation and measurements. Fundamentals about biomedical transducers: resistive, inductive, capacitive, photoelectric, piezoelectric, electrochemical transducers. Biopotential electrodes.
Generation of biopontentials and their measurement. Instrumentation for electrocardiography.
Diagnostic medical ultrasound instrumentation: fundamentals on ultrasound physics; ultrasound probe; A-scan; B-scan; M-mode; Doppler flow-meters.
Fundamentals on techniques for image formation in medicine.
Radiology imaging in medicine: physics, instrumentation, image formation, contrast media, digital radiology, computerized tomography (CT) techniques.
Nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in medicine: physics, instrumentation, image formation, stimulation sequences, functional MRI.
Nuclear medicine: physics, instrumentation, image formation, computerized tomography techniques (SPECT, PET).
Safety in biomedical instrumentation.

Laboratories: acquisition of biopontentials (electrooculogram and electrocardiogram). Visit to hospitals and medical facilities.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Classroom teaching and laboratories.
