Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of chemistry. Electronic configurations of the elements. Atomic orbitals. Molecular orbitals. Electronegativity. Covalent bonds. Intermolecular bonds. Acids and bases.
Target skills and knowledge: Give basic information useful for the comprehension and the rationalization of the design, production and utilization of the organic molecules and materials.
Examination methods: Two written in-course tests with the possibility of a supplement oral test.
I and II Appeals: written exams with optional oral tests.
III and IV Appeals: oral exams.
Assessment criteria: Evaluation based on the following criteria in descending order of importance:
1. Understanding the reactivity of organic compounds.
2. Ability to analyze, classify, predict physical and chemical properties of organic molecules.
3. Knowledge of nomenclature and uses of organic compounds.
Course unit contents: Structure and reactivity of organic molecules. Isomerism. Aliphatic hydrocarbons: alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and dienes. Aromatic hydrocarbons: benzene and arenes. Alkyl halides. Alcohols. Ethers and epoxides. Aldehydes and Ketones. Carboxylic acids and their derivatives: amides, esters, anhydrides, acyl halides. Synthetic polymers.
