Syllabus
Prerequisites: Chemistry, physics and mathematics courses of the first and second year.
Target skills and knowledge: The main objective of the course is to teach students the basic knowledge on the relationship between structure and properties of the different classes of materials. In particular, the relationships between the structure of metals, ceramics and polymers and their mechanical properties will be investigated. At the end of the course the student must be able to know how to interpret the two-component phase diagrams. Furthermore, it must have an overview of the main production processes of the various classes of materials.
Examination methods: Written exam consisting of two extended questions and five short questions. Furthermore there will be at least one exercise on the following topics: phase diagrams, thermo-mechanical properties, diffusion, structure.
Assessment criteria: The assessment will be based on the student's understanding of the arguments, on the acquisition of concepts and methodologies proposed and the ability to apply them in a conscious and autonomous.
Course unit contents: Structure of the materials: bonds, crystalline and amorphous structure, defects in the crystals.
Thermodynamics of solid state materials: phase diagrams, surface energy.
Phase transformations and diffusion. Glass transition.
Properties of materials: mechanical, thermal, corrosion, optical.
Different classes of materials and their processes.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures, classroom exercises, tutoring sections, class quizzes, schematics and concept maps.

Additional Information for students of the Bachelor of Materials Science
The course of Materials Science is divided into two modules. The module B is borrowed from the course of Fundamentals of Materials Science, and the module A is given by Prof. C. Marega. The program of module A is the following:
Introduction to Polymer Science. Definitions and terms relating to polymers. Classification of polymers. General information on solutions and fractionation. Methods for determination of average molecular weights: osmometry, light scattering, viscometry, GPC. Spectroscopic techniques, UV-Visible, IR, NMR. Amorphous polymers. Polymers and crystallinity. Thermal analysis (DSC, TGA). Wide and small angle X-ray diffraction. Optical and electron microscopy. Elements of linear viscoelasticity. Mechanical properties and their measurement. Rheology and rheometry.
The exam will be oral.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Slides of the course will be available from the moodle platform of DII. There will also be: diagrams, details on specific topics, solved exercises, examples of exam questions.
