Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic concept of mathematical analysis, linear algebra and geometry.
Target skills and knowledge: Basis concepts of numerical analysis e programming languages as MATLAB, to be able to solve applied mathematics problems in several
engineering applications.
Examination methods: There are two steps:
a MATLAB exercise
a written examination

The final mark is done by a weighted average of the marks obtained in the two previous steps.
Assessment criteria: Mainly based on the knowledge of the studens and her/his capability to attack calculus numerical problems in the theorical and practical aspects.
Course unit contents: The structure of the computer. Machine arithmetic. Nonlinear equations in one variable. Interpolation and approximation. Piecewise Linear Interpolation. Introduction to spline. Numerical integration (trapezoidal, Cavalieri-Simpson rule, Richardson extrapolation).
Solution of linear systems by direct and iterative methods.
Introduction to differentiation formulas and to numerical methods for the solution of Initial Value Ordinary Differential Equations. MATLAB as programming language.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal lectures and programming laboratories.

"Appunti sparsi su Octave" (written in italian), suggested book (see references), and downloadable resources on MOODLE page.
