Prerequisites: Mathematical Analysis I and Physics I
Target skills and knowledge: The course provides foundations of fluid mechanics and basic methods to solve engineering problems of fluid statics and dynamics.
The course of 6CFUs (ECTS) focuses on theoretical aspects, while the course of 9CFUs provides also methodologies to solve practical problems of fluid mechanics.
Examination methods: Written examination concerning the theoretical aspects and the solution of practical exercises. 50% on the understanding of the theoretical aspects of fluid mechanics.
50% on the ability to solve practical engineering problems.
Assessment criteria: Completeness, rigour and orderliness of the essay; clarity of exposition; rigour in using the technical terminology. The level of correspondence to these criteria will determine the graduation of the judgement and, consequently, the final mark.
Course unit contents: Fluid properties. Density, pressure, temperature, vapor pressure, surface tension, viscosity. Continuum description.
Fluid statics: Pressure and its measure. Hydrostatic forces on plane and curved surfaces. Applications. [Overall balance method].
Fluid Kinematics. Lagrangian and Eulerian description. Local motion analysis (deformation, translation and rotations). Reynolds transport problem.
Fluid Dynamics. Mass balance equation; Momentum balance equation; Energy balance equation. Navier-Stokes equations. Analytical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in simple conditions (Poiseuille). Non-dimensional equations of fluid mechanics. Reynolds number. Inviscid fluid. Euler equations. Bernoulli theorem and applications. [Examples of potential flows solution]
[Notes on the dynamics of vorticity. Motion around bodies: resistance and lift.]
Basic concepts of laminar and turbulent boundary layers. Laminar and turbulent regimes. Localized and distributed pressure losses. Pumps and turbines. Altimetric problems in long pipes. [Measure of flow rate and velocity.]
[Piping networks in steady flow. Overview of unsteady flow in pipes. Overview of open channel flow solution.]

The parts within square brackets pertain only to the 9CFU course.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal teaching and practical exercises, that the student has to further develop and deepen with his study.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Textbook and additional material that will be provided during the course.
