Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of chemistry: Atomic structure, electronic configuration of elements; periodic table. Chemical bonds. Aggregation states of matter. Basic of thermodynamic and electrochemistry.
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course is to offer to the students suitable knowledge for understanding the relationship between chemical characteristics of the materials used in aerospace field and their physical properties, with particular attention to the technological problems to face up to now.
Examination methods: the exam consists of a written task consisting of 10 questions
(including numerical exercises and open-ended questions) and a dissertation on a topic agreed with the teacher to be presented both in written and oral presentation.
Assessment criteria: the first part of the exam contributes a maximum of 20 points which give rise to a score of 1 to 2 for each of the 10 questions contained in the task by virtue of the correctness and completeness of the answers.
The vote of the second part, for a maximum of 10 points, derives from an evaluation of the care with which the bibliographic research was conducted on the chosen topic, its organization in a coherent but concise speech, the ability to highlight open problems and perspectives research in the specific field, as well as in the clarity of the exhibition.
Detailed information will be provided at the beginning of the course.
Course unit contents: Two arguments will be developed:
1) Chemistry of fuels. Chemistry of energy sources including radiochemistry and redox processes. The chemistry of oil. The chemistry of combustion processes. Hydrogen. Propellants (liquid, solid, hybrid).
2) Chemistry of atmosphere: formation, control, detection and reduction of polluttants.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The lessons will be offered by using either slides or black-board. Any further explanations on the concerns raised during the lesson will be addressed at the end of each lesson. On appointment, the lecturer will be available to talk with students during office hours. During the course some visits to research laboratories of interest will be organized.
the last lessons will be organized with the presentation of the dissertation papers to the other students, in order to stimulate curiosity and group discussion.
