Prerequisites: To achieve the targeted objectives of the course, the knowledge of the contents of Analisi matematica 1 (Differential and integral analyses) and Fisica 1 (Work, Energy calorimetry) are necessary.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims at giving the following knowledge and skills on:
- Applied Thermodynamics
- Psychrometrics
- Heat transfer processes
- Applied acoustics (basic notions).
Examination methods: The exam is subdivided in two main parts:
Part I: the student has to solve a numerical problem, which consists of a exercise to verify her/his achieved application skills on the analysis of a thermodynamic system and on his treatment and solution.
Part II: the student has to take a theoretical exam concerning the course's topics to verify the achieved knowledge and skills.
Assessment criteria: The following evaluation criteria will be used for the assessment of the achieved knowledge and skills:
- Completeness of theoretical knowledge on the analysis of thermodynamics processes, psychrometrics, and heat transfer processes;
- Application skills linked to the theoretical knowledge for the calculation and analysis of thermodynamics systems;
- Making judgements skills about the analysis and solution of thermodynamics, psychometrics, and heat transfer problems.
- Communications skills and accuracy in using technical terms and in the content presentation.
Course unit contents: The specific contents of the course are the followings:

Applied Thermodynamics:
- Measurement systems and units.
- Definitions and fundamentals properties.
- I and II law of Thermodynamcis.
- The ideal gas.
- Real fluids and thermodynamics diagrams.
- Direct and inverse cycles for gas;
- Direct and inverse cycles vapour.

- Fundamentals definition and properties of moist air;
- Thermodynamic processes of moist air;
- Air conditioning cycles.

Heat transfer:
- Thermal conduction;
- Thermal convection;
- Thermal radiation;
- Global heat transfer and heat exchangers.

Applied acoustics:
- Fundamental definition and properties;
- An outline of building acoustics;
- An outline of sound insulation.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is structured as it follows:
- Theoretical oral lectures in which the professor will introduce and analyze the applied thermodynamics, the psychrometrics, and the heat transfer, also using powerpoint support;
- Practical oral lectures in which the professor will guide the student through the solution of numerical problems about applied thermodynamics, the psychrometrics, and the heat transfer;
- # 2 (2 hours) QTs (Question Time) session in which the professor will clarify specific topics in which the students would have found difficulties.
- Use of the moodle platform to promote the study through individual activities. For example, a contest on the II law of thermodynamics.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The teaching material will be available to students through the course moodle platform.
