Syllabus
Target skills and knowledge: Fundamentals of the mechanical behaviour of materials applied to manufacturing processes, surfaces and tribology. Knowledge of (i) metal forming, machining and polymer forming processes, (ii) tools and machines, (iii) non-conventional and joining processes, (iv) automation in manufacturing systems.
Examination methods: The final evaluation will consist on:
- witten examination: analytical calculations, questions
- oral examination: on theoretical aspects;
- discussion of the group projects: evaluation of the quality of the group projects developed during in the laboratory
Assessment criteria: The students will be evaluated on the basis of the following criteria:
- knowledge of the main manufacturing processes for the production of metal and polymer components;
- knowledge on the fundamentals for the manufacturing process design;
- knowledge of the analytical formulations for the design of manufacturing processes;
- ability in the choice of the proper manufacturing chains for the production of specific components;
- team working ability
Course unit contents: With the aim to develop both theoretical and practical knowledge for the design of metalforming processes, three modules will be developed:
(i) lectures focused on theoretical aspects of the most relevant manufacturing processes.;
(ii) laboratory experience to apply the theoretical aspects to real industrial cases.
(iii) technical visits to companies and seminars given by technicians from industries.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Fundamental of mechanical behaviour of materials: definitions of stresses, strains, strain rate, elasto-plastic behaviour, yield criteria, work of deformation, residual stresses. Mechanical tests. Surface and tribology: friction models in manufacturing processes, friction measurements. Casting processes: ingot casting and continuous casting, casting processes. Bulk deformation processes: forging, rolling, extrusion, rod, wire and tube drawing, swaging. Sheet metal forming processes: sheet metal characteristics, shearing, bending of flat sheet and plates, stretch forming, hydro forming, spinning, deep drawing, stamping, formability of metal sheets, spring back. Material removal processes: mechanics of chip formation, tool wear and failure, machinability, cutting-tool materials, cutting processes, machines, machining, turning, drilling, economics of machining. Grinding. Non conventional machining. Forming processes of polymers. Rapid prototyping. Processing of metal powders. Joining processes. Automation of manufacturing processes.
