Target skills and knowledge: The students learn the basic concepts on mechanical behaviour of materials oriented to assess the structural strength of components and structures under static as well as fatigue loadings. A project will be developed concerning the design and assessment of a reduction gear unit.
Examination methods: Discussion and evaluation of the project with maximum score 3 points.
Written examination-first part: three exercises, maximum three hours
Written examination-second part: three questions concerning theory, maximum 45 minutes
The final score of the written examination is:

(Score_FirstPart + Score_SecondPart + Score_Project)/2

Oral examination only for students having a score of the written examination equal to or greater than 26. In this case, final score is the average between the scores of written and oral examinations.
Assessment criteria: The discussion of the project evaluates the skills of the student to perform correctly the technical calculations, to adopt appropriate technical choices and the technical quality of the written report.
The written examination with three exercises evaluates the ability to solve a practical structural strength assessment problem by using the appropriate theory and by performing calculations correctly.
The written examination with three questions of theory evaluates the knowledge of demonstrations concerning the different theories, along with their limitation of applicability.
the oral examination evaluates the appropriateness of the technical language and the methodological adequacy in presenting the theoretical topics.
Course unit contents: Stress/strain state
Mohr circles. Criteria for Static strength (Guest, Bach, Von Mises).
Curved beams, thin-walled vessels.
Mechanical behaviour of materials: engineering and true stress/strain quantities.
Stress controlled fatigue. Constant amplitude fatigue behaviour of metallic materials. Main parameters affecting fatigue behaviour of metallic materials. Variable amplitude fatigue. Cycle counting.
Strain-controlled fatigue. Material characterisation, Manson-Coffin curve. Notch stress/strain estimation: Neuber rule and constancy of the strain concentration factor. Limitations of applicability of the strain-life approach.

Design, analysis and structural strength assessment of a reduction gear unit.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Two Theoretical lectures and one Exercise lesson per week.
Project of the course to carry out by groups of students.
