Syllabus
Prerequisites: Mathematical analysis; linear algebra; physics (mechanics).
Target skills and knowledge: Basic knowledge on the mechanics of deformable bodies, applied to beams and beam systems, including statically indeterminate systems, aiming to design and verify simple structures.
Examination methods: Written and oral exam.
Assessment criteria: The student has to provide sufficient knowledge of the topics covered in the course and has to be able to analyze and solve simple structures using the methods taught during the course, showing capacity of reasoning.
Course unit contents: Models of structures, materials, external forces and constraints. Study of rigid-body kinematics. Equilibrium in the undeformed and deformed configurations, small displacements. Statically determined systems of plain beams. Moment, shear and normal diagrams. Deformation of a beam: the elastic curve. Continuum mechanics: stress and strain analysis for geometrically linear problems. Mechanical properties of materials. Allowable stress and failure criteria for ductile and brittle materials. De Saint-Venant model. Buckling of columns.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal lectures, using blackboard or tablet.
