Syllabus
Prerequisites: The field is political science-international relations and organisation. It requires knowledge of basic concepts and major approaches of political science and international relations.
Target skills and knowledge: By passing the exam the student will have acquired the knowledge of the the theories and approaches and of the cognitive data to understanding the complexity of the evolving system of European Union, with particular regard to the institutional architecture, the decision-making, and the actors of the political demand.
In particular the course intends to help students to increase the knowledge of the EU political system, having regard to opportunities which are offered to the civil society organisations to access to the EU decision-making process, and also to obstacles that hinder interests representation and political participation.
The student will have also acquired the knowledge related to affiliation between national parties and European political Parties in view of the 2019 European election.
With reference to the autonomy of judgment and communication skills, the student will be able to critically interpret data and relevant facts of European Union system, as well as to mature and express scientifically and ethically founded judgments.
Examination methods: The exam consists of a written test with 3 open questions on the topics covered by the course. The exam duration is 90 minutes.
Assessment criteria: Score will be from 18 to 30.
Students shall show to manage the basic information relating to theories of European integration, EU political system, interest representation in the EU system, European party system; ability to analyse and critically approach issues dealing with international politics; linguistic competence with regard to international relations language.
Course unit contents: 1. The process of European integration: theories and models.
2. The European Union as a political system.
2.1 Human rights, subsidiarity, EU citizenship, intercultural dialogue.
2.2 EU Institutional architecture.
2.3 EU decision-making process.
3. The actors of European political demand and the problem of democratic deficit.
3.1 The representation of the interests in the EU system.
3.2 The civil society networks in the EU: the practice of "civil dialogue".
3.3 The European party system: the European party federations, the national political parties and the parliamentary groups.
4. The role of local and regional governments in the process of European integration: The European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC).
5. Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP).
6. European governance and political development of the EU.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Topics of the course will be addressed mainly through frontal lessons. Nevertheless, seminars with scholars on some specific topics will be scheduled.
Working groups, seminars, role play, using documents of EU.
