Prerequisites: Students should have English at B1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge and understanding
Upon passing the exam, the student:
- has a good written and oral knowledge of the English language, having reached a level of B2 according to the CEFR; students can opt for B1 if unable to reach B2, but they will not receive a certificate;
- possesses specific knowledge of the socio-cultural situation related to English and intercultural communication;

Applying knowledge and understanding
The student
- is able to apply his/her knowledge of English to the principal formal and informal situations and contexts and can make use of complex morpho-syntactic structures
- is able to work autonomously and in groups, showing flexibility in organising his/her work

Making judgements
The student
- has the linguistic, critical and interpretive capacities which enable autonomous reflection and judgment;
- can gather and select data and recognise its importance in formulating judgments regarding the socio-cultural and intercultural aspects of English.

Communication skills
The student
- is able to communicate effectively and correctly in English, regarding general information and specific knowledge pertaining to the area of study which requires complex morpho-syntactic structures;
- has the capacity to communicate in written and spoken English, also using computer technology, information, knowledge and ideas related to his/her field of study in international and multicultural contexts.
- is able to produce clear texts on a wide range of topics and to express an opinion on a topic of current events, proposing arguments for and against.
- is able to open a dialogue with experts and non-experts in the field using the appropriate communicative register.

Learning skills
The student has developed the learning skills necessary to be able to
- perfect his/her own linguistic competence
- update and consolidate his/her knowledge
- apply this knowledge in various contexts.
Examination methods: The exam consists in the following parts:
- Test di Abilità LInguistica TAL B2 (reading and listening). Students who are unable to pass the B2 level can take the B1 test, which is also valid for the exam;
- an oral test based on academic speaking skills (held by the CEL). Further information can be found in Moodle**
- a 90-minute written test on the contents of the Professor’s course.

The final exam is written. It lasts 90 minutes and no dictionaries are permitted. For further information about the exam, and a sample, see here:

NB: Students are strongly advised to take the TAL and the oral test during their first year of study. In order to attend the Professor’s course in the second year students should have passed both tests.
Students can take the TAL during regular exam sessions and also on other dates during the year. Information about the TAL test can be found on the website of the Language Centre:
If students already have a valid international certificate at B1 level or above, they need not take the TAL or oral tests (see Moodle ‘Informazioni Lingua Inglese Triennale’ for a list of recognised certificates)

** Students can choose to complete all the TAL test, that is, the written and oral sections. Please contact your Docente.
Assessment criteria: The marking will take into consideration these five areas:
1) Task Fulfilment, i.e. whether or not you follow instructions and completed the task;
2) Register, i.e. whether the language forms used are appropriate to the situation or task;
3) Organisation/coherence/cohesion, i.e. how well the different parts of the text are connected;
4) Use of Language, i.e. grammatical range and accuracy, lexical resources, grammar, spelling and punctuation;
5) Knowledge of the topics studied, and the socio-cultural background as related to the English encountered during the course.
Course unit contents: The course aims at developing the student’s knowledge and competence in the intercultural, socio-cultural and linguistic areas, including morpho-syntactic structures and lexis.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: All lessons are held in English.
During the lessons, and for homework, students will be involved in reading, comprehension and writing activities, as well as grammatical analysis and exercises. Participants will be asked to participate in group work as well as in individual activities.
Students are expected to participate actively in the lessons.
