Prerequisites: This course requires basic knowledge of Microeconomics. Basic knowledge of Business Strategy would be helpful.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims at developing the following competencies and abilities:
1. To understand the economic nature of environmental problems
2. To understand the rationale of governmental action
3. To critically assess the potential advantages and disadvantages of alternative policy tools which might be used for pollution management
4. To understand how firms can improve their environmental performance and how and when they can achieve a competitive advantage through green innovations
Examination methods: Teamwork (presentation to the class of an assigned topic/paper) and Final written exam (consisting of exercises, 20%, and open-ended, 80%)
Assessment criteria: Your grade is determined as follows: 30% Teamwork; 70% Exam. For students not regularly attending the course the grade is determined solely on the basis of the written examination.
Course unit contents: The course is divided in two main parts. The first part covers the following topics:
- The economic nature of environmental problems
- The theoretical foundations of environmental policies
- Environmental policies in practice: goals and instruments
- Valuing the environment
- Economic growth and environmental quality
- The spatial dimension of environmental problems
The second part covers the following topics:
- External and internal pressures toward the greening of industries
- Green innovations and competitive strategies
- Internationalization, green strategies and the circular economy

Additional notes about suggested reading: No textbook is required.
Materials for the final exam preparation include: class slides, your personal notes and compulsory readings. Class slides will be posted on the course website prior to each lecture. Compulsory readings will be announced at the beginning of each lecture. All the class slides and readings are compulsory exam material (slides/notes do not replace readings and readings do not replace slides/notes)
