Syllabus
Prerequisites: Knowledge of general biology and botany with particular regard on the structure and function of primary and secondary generator of tissues, xylem, phloem in aboveground and belowground of trees. Transport of sap and nutrient of tree. General knowledge of fungi, bacteria and viruses.
Examination methods: The examination will be written.
Assessment criteria: The student will be evaluated on the completeness of knowledge on diseases of ornamental plants , and on the mode of exposure with particular regard to clarity.
Course unit contents: Methods to recognize the healthy plant. Ecological role of disease. The diseased plant. Symptoms and signs. Biotic agents of tree disease fungi, bacteria and viruses.
Generalized biotic diseases, powdery mildews, root rots, wood decay. Symptoms, pathogenesis, life cycle, resistance, diagnosis and control measures.
Diseases of elm and sycamore. Symptoms, pathogenesis, life cycle, resistance, diagnosis and control measures.
Diseases of oaks, ashes, beech, cherry, poplars and other hardwoods. Symptoms, pathogenesis, life cycle, resistance, diagnosis and control measures.
Disease of cypress, pines, cedars spruces and fir. Symptoms, pathogenesis, life cycle, resistance, diagnosis and control measures.
Decline diseases, syndrome, symptoms, countermeasures against declines.
Strategies for the control of diseases. European plant protection legislation.
Urban trees management.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Will be conducted lectures, practical exercises on laboratory diagnosis of major diseases and educational trips in modern and historic parks and gardens. In this way they will be evaluated in field interactions between diseases in different environments and problems associated with the design of green spaces.
