Plant and animal biology
Forest Botany
Forest Ecology
Target skills and knowledge: The main aims of the course concern the acquisition of information about bio-ecology of forest animals in a context of forest protection and game management in mountain ecosystems.

The student acquires basic knowledge in the field of bio-ecology and systematics of the main groups of forest animals, with particular reference to insects and phytophagous vertebrates damaging the wood production and the conservation of forest habitats.

The student applies the knowledge of the animal biology and ecology of the animals to the forest environment of the temperate regions, in the framework of the forests and natural habitat protection.
Examination methods: The examination consists of a written test including photographic identification of animal species described during the course, to be done in 1 hour.
Assessment criteria: The overall assessment of the student is based on the following criteria:

- Knowledge of the course contents
- Understanding, organization and application of the acquired knowledge
- Ability to integrate the acquired knowledge with related scientific matters
- Knowledge and use of appropriate specific languages
- Ability to expose clearly and with use of scientific language
Course unit contents: - bio-ecological classification of forest, montane and alpine fauna (1 CFU).

- pests affecting European forests (4 CFU).

- forest pests recently introduced to Italy; game species; study of freshwater fauna (1 CFU).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will be conducted through lectures supplemented by scientific seminars and field works.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The program can be studied on lecture notes and scientific texts (see reference texts), and specific identification manuals.
