Prerequisites: Knowledges of Forest ecology, Forest mensuration, Forest botany
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course is to provide the student with knowledge of silvicultural sistems, dealing with the treatments oriented to obtain the regeneration in woods of different forest structures, both high forests and coppices.
The student acquires the ability to apply the concepts of forest biology and ecology to the care and cultivation of the woods, in order to reconcile the utilization of the resource, in respect of its protection and sustainability.
For this purpose the course includes also a preliminary part with elements of biology of the trees in the forest and a part briefly dealing with methods for site analysis.
Examination methods: Oral examination.
Assessment criteria: The acquisition of expected skills and the proper use of the specific terminology will be ascertained.
Course unit contents: Forest tree biology: tree growth, shape, propagation (reproduction, multiplication).
Site analysis, productivity.
Stand parameters.
Silvicultural systems in even-aged forests, uneven-aged forests, coppices. Conversions. Silvicultural treatments in forests with particular functions.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lessons: 40 h
Class and field exercizes: 24 h

Attendance at lessons is recommended in order to collect lecture notes.
