Syllabus
Prerequisites: The student must hold knowledge and expertise in the field of general and inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, biology and mineralogy.
Target skills and knowledge: The student will acquire information about the physical, chemical and biochemical processes that occur in the soil relating to both mineral and organic materials and organisms. Notions of mineral solubility, soil reaction (pH), cation and anion exchange, buffering effects and nutrient availability will be a matter of the course. A great deal of study will be directed towards the establishment of the distribution and mapping of soils in order to determine their suitability for crop production.
Examination methods: The examination of the student's advancement will be performed through two ways:
written and oral tests.
To overcome the examination, a detailed report about the laboratory and field experiences is mandatory. The evaluation of the report will contribute to the final evaluation on the whole.
Assessment criteria: The competences of the students concerning the physical, chemical and biochemical processes of organic and mineral matter will be evaluated. Furthermore, the student will be also evaluated for his capacity to interpret the analytical and pedological data reported in a certificate of analyses and/or in a pedological report. The ability of the student to propose solution for the management and the recovery of soil fertility.
Course unit contents: 1° credit: Definition of soil components; minerals (silicates and non-silicate) and rocks; stability of minerals; weathering processes; products of alteration; clay minerals (characteristics and genesis); oxides and hydroxides and residual products.

2° credit: Soil-forming processes.
Soil survey: different scales of detail and standards; preliminary soil study in the countryside and the tools available for classification. Characteristics of Veneto Region soils.

3° credit: classification of soils: the American classification (USDA Soil Taxonomy) and the World Reference Base (FAO). Classification of humus forms (Référentiel Pédologique) (Jabiol et al., 1995).

4° credit: Soil organic matter (SOM) and humic substances (HS): definition, functions, quantifying SOM and HS contents and chemical structure and analyses. Dynamic of SOM and C/N ratio. Theories on HS formation.

5° credit: Physical properties. Texture and structure. Bulk density and porosity. Soil water content and water potential relationships. Soil water movement.

6° credit: Soil chemistry: soil colloidal behaviour. Kinetics and mechanisms of soil chemical reactions. Ion exchange phenomena. Soil pH and pH buffering. The degree of soil reaction (pH): the acid soil and the chemistry of aluminium; the lime requirement; alkaline soil formation and adsorption and their correction. Redox phenomena.

7° credit: Soil analyses: sampling and sample preparation, determination of the skeleton, texture, pH, total and active calcium carbonate, organic carbon and organic matter, cation exchange capacity, nitrogen, phosphorus Olsen, exchangeable potassium, micronutrients; interpretation of analytical results

8° credit: Soil fertility and plant nutrition. Bioavailability of major essential nutrients and micronutrients. Soil fertility evaluation.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will be organized as follows:
40 hours of lessons;
8 hours of field practice exercises and 16 hours of laboratory experience.
