Syllabus
Prerequisites: General and Inorganic Chemistry with Elements of Physical Chemistry (AGN1029222)
Target skills and knowledge: You will learn the main properties of the organic molecules and of biologically relevant macromolecules. At the end of the course you will be able to draw the chemical structure of complex organic molecules, to predict their reactivity and to relate their properties with the molecular structure.
Examination methods: The final exam consists of a computerized test with multiple choice answers, followed by an oral examination. Attendance to the laboratory experiments WILL positively contribute to the final score.
Assessment criteria: The ability to recognize the organic compounds classes (alcohols, amines, aldehydes, etc. ..) and to derive their physical properties (e.g., solubility in different environments) analyzing the chemical structure will be evaluated.
It will be also checked the capability to connect the properties of a functional group with those of the macromolecules containing it (e.g., esters and triglycerides, amides and proteins).
Course unit contents: I unit - Covalent bond. Acids and bases. Alkanes and cycloalkanes. Alkenes. Alkynes.
II unit - Stereochemistry. Alkyl halides. Aromatic compounds.
III unit - Alcohols and phenols. Ethers, epoxides, thiols and sulphides. Aldehydes and ketones.
IV unit - Carboxylic acids and derivatives. Amines and heterocycles.
V unit - Synthetic organic polymers. Biodegradable polymers. Overview of the main features of mass, NMR, IR and UV spectrocopies applied to the identification of organic compounds.
VI unit - Carbohydrates. Amino acids and proteins.
VII unit - Lipids. Nucleic acids.
VIII unit - Laboratory experiments: preparation of a biodegradable plastic and enzymatic hydrolys of starch.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: There will be lectures for 56 hours, 4 hours of classroom exercises and 4 hours of laboratory exercises. In the classroom, the blackboard will be widely used for drawings and explanations. The electronic files shown during the lectures will be provided to the students.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The availability of a book of organic chemistry is strongly recommended. Some to choose from are listed below. For a thorough and in-depth preparation, the electronic material (slide presentations) made ‚Äč‚Äčavailable to the students is not sufficient.
