Prerequisites:

Though the following topics will be briefly recalled, the student is supposed to have a good knowledge of
 linear and quadratic equations and inequalities,
 equation of line, parabola and circle,
 main trigonometric relations,
 properties of exponentiation and logarithms. 
Target skills and knowledge:

This course aims at providing mathematical tools for the study of functions and the solutions of practical problems by means of derivatives, integrals and differential equations. 
Examination methods:

Written exam, possibly followed by a brief oral exam. 
Assessment criteria:

In the written exam the students are required to solve some exercises of the same kind as those proposed during the course.
The oral exam consists in a brief discussion of the written exam and/or some questions on the main theoretical notions of the course. 
Course unit contents:

 Recollection of some basic notions.
 The notion of function, elementary functions.
 Exponentiation and logarithms.
 Limit of a function.
 Derivatives, maximum and minimum points, increasing and decreasing functions, convex and convave functions.
 Study of a function.
 Functions of two or more variables.
 Integrals.
 Some kinds of differential equations.

Lecture notes will be given to the students. It is also possible (though not strictly necessary) to use the books suggested below.
