Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge of the basic principles of Economics and their relevance for the study of local development. Knowledge of the various approaches proposed by economics for the study of the local dimension of economic development.

Analytical skills concerning the use of economic principles and their application. Research skills concerning the study of local areas phenomena and local development projects.
Examination methods: Oral exam with the discussion of a short paper.
Assessment criteria: Evaluation of
1) acquisition of basic economics skills
2) in class presentations
3) final discussion of the paper.
Course unit contents: This is a course on the basic principles and theories of Economics oriented to the study of local development. The main purpose is to highlight the local dimension of economic development and the specific contribution of local factors.

The first part deals with the principles of economics and the economic perspective on local phenomena. This provides the basic theoretical and analytical basis to the study of local development. To discuss that we focus on how space is taken into account by economic models to then consider other approaches such as that of the local productive systems and the interaction between local actors in the process of development. That helps to bring into focus the many economic issues that are involved in local development and the relationship between economic and non economic variables. This is especially examined during students in class presentations and specific lectures.
