Syllabus
Prerequisites: A general view of philosophical and scientific thought.
Target skills and knowledge: 1. A good knowledge both of Popper's epistemology and Socrates, Plato, Hegel and Marx's ideas about justice, according to Popperian interpretations of them in "The Open Society and its Enemies".
2. The ability to read this text critically and to discuss its main theoretical matters.
Examination methods: The exam consists in an oral test at the end of the course and is both of informative and critical nature.
Assessment criteria: Above all, the oral exam will valuate the student's ability to set out the claims of each philosopher Popper dealt with and to discuss the interpretation he gave of him.
Course unit contents: 1. The real idea of science, according to Popper.
2. Popper vs. the Verification Theory of meaning; his choice of the Falsifiability Principle.
3. The concepts of 'Open Society' and 'Closed Society', and their methodological use by Popper.
4. The ideas of freedom and democracy, and their paradoxes.
5. Socrates, as the typical philosopher of the 'Open Society'.
6. Plato, as a typical example of 'totalitarian' philosopher.
7. The true meaning of Platonic communism.
8. Two opposite models of contemporary totalitarian thought: Hegel and Marx.
9. Marx's historical materialism: an erroneous idea of science, according to Popper.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures will be mainly frontal; but sometimes there will be time left for a discussion about the possible uses of the concepts of 'Open' and 'Closed Society' in different fields, as the psychological and educational ones.
Additional notes about suggested reading: For attending students only, the notes taken at lessons are resources adequate; the unattending students can find an alternative help in a good textbook and the suitable entries of some philosophical dictionary or encyclopaedia.
