Syllabus
Prerequisites: The course aims to introduce the philosophy's students to cultural anthropology as a discipline institutionalized, professional practice and project of critical knowledge. The course program is therefore tailored to accord to the philosophical curriculum. Who wish to attend the classes should have a general knowledge of contemporary epistemological debates concerning the social sciences in the twentieth century (and in particular the philosophical hermeneutics and the phenomenology) as those related to the politics and ethics of otherness. The teacher will give on demand a supplementary literature for students who will feel the need to fill any gaps. It is also necessary to have some familiarity with the "classic" philosophical issues that cultural anthropology has questioned since its constitution: the tension between the universal, the particular and the singular, the comparison between different criteria of intelligibility and the claims of truth of the Western tradition, the contemporary return to ontologies, etc.
Target skills and knowledge: At the end of the course the students will be able to understand the research's practices (fieldwork), the intellectual operations (theoretical mediations) and the produced knowledge (ethnographic monograph) in the historical development of the discipline; they will be able to detect the philosophical problems at the heart of the discipline; they will be able too to read an ethnographic monograph and to grasp its relevance (the ways of construction of the object, its theoretical mediations ..).
Examination methods: For the students attending the classes regularly the examination will focus on the discussion of one of the issues addressed in the classroom and on some parts of the handbook "Storia dell'Antropologia" which will be indicated by the teacher. Moreover the students attending the classes regularly will file at the end of the classes a review note of a different text from the handbook listed in the bibliography, with the agreement of the teacher.

The examination of the students not attending the classes will consist of an oral discussion on the handbook "Storia dell'Antropologia" in all its parts (including the anthological one) and the writing of a review note of a text among those listed in the bibliography agreed with the teacher.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will refer to the acquisition of different skills: to analyze and to understand the issues covered adequately contextualized; to highlight the argumentative structures and the conceptual nodes of the different schools, paradimi and currents; critically to rework the contents through the comparison and the internal correlation between the different theoretical and practical currents;to make oral preasentations in a clear and appropriate use of the "own" vocabulary discipline
Course unit contents: We will go throughout the main currents of cultural anthropology keeping clear in the background the questions on the epistemological relationship with the stranger / foreigner, from the "discovery" at the dawn of modernity to the contemporary management / production of "cultural identity"
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course takes place in accordance with the lectures. The methodology of approach to content consists in the critical reading and reflection of the handbook and the monograph, accompanied by their contextualization in the disciplinary debates that have produced the former and in those they themselves have generated. The time of writing of the monograph reading notes shall also be an ineluctable learning experience. We will use the ethnographic film screenings to introduce the different topics in the course.
