Syllabus
Prerequisites: A general knowledge of Medieval History is requested.
Target skills and knowledge: Lessons intend to provide not only specific knowledge about topical arguments of lessons ( Merchants' Travels in the Late Middle Ages), but to approach students to critical method about Full and Late Medieval History.
Examination methods: Students are required to present themselves to a spoken examination, better by appointment, about the lessons' and the texts's subjects. During the course, each student shall present a short paper about a chosen argument. It is possible to be examinated without following lessons, studying the appointed texts and agreeing with the teacher about a written paper on a chosen subject, to be sent to the teacher before the examination.
Assessment criteria: The valuation will be based on personal understanding of contents and of their interrelations.
Course unit contents: The course is about " Merchant's travels in the Late Middle Ages (XI-XV centuries)". We'll analyze the role of foreign merchants in alien towns and countries, financial tools, ways of life and hostelries, sea and road journeys, tolls and political control, as important clues of the economic Late Medieval growth.Discussing the role of money and credit, we'll consider ethics and economic medieval thought. During the lessons we'll read primary sources from "pratiche di mercatura" and merchant's books.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Students are required to attend and to take part to discussions. Lessons shall comprehend reading of sources and discussing students' expositions.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Photocopies of documentary sources and so on will be given by the teacher or loaded on Moodle. Texts for students attending lessons are:
-for 9 CFU 1) book by Provero-Vallerani ( from p.261 onwards)
2) book by Cortonesi-Palermo, and paper to present during the lessons

for 6 CFU : only book by Cortonesi-Palermo and paper during lessons.

Students non attending lessons shall study :
