Prerequisites: The course requires some knowledges of Physics , Mathematics , General Chemistry.
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge of the structure of celestial bodies and of the physical mechanisms producing astronomical phenomena . Critical ability to analyse a popular article of Astronomy.
Examination methods: Oral examinations.
Assessment criteria: Knowledge of the topics presented in the lectures.
Ability to discuss and present clearly the topics of the course even to those who are new to Astronomy.
Course unit contents: The stars and the birth of the Sun. Structure of the Sun: origin of the solar power, solar activity. Structure of the Solar System. Laws of the motion of the planets: Newton, Kepler, Titius-Bode. Origin of the planets. Protoplanetary disk and Early Heavy Bombardment of planets. The interior of the planets: sources of energy, core, mantle, crust, isostatic equilibrium. The planetary magnetospheres. Morphology of the rocky planets: the highlands, impact craters, faults and lowlands. Volcanoes in the solar system. Light. Laws of the luminous flux, magnitude. Astronomical distances: parallax and distance modulus. Laws of the blackbody. Spectral continuum, emission and absorption lines, Doppler effect. The stars: spectral classification and the HR diagram. Collapse and star formation. Brown dwarfs. Nuclear fusion. Synthesis of chemical elements. Phases of red giant. Planetary nebulae. White dwarfs. Evolution of large masses stars: supernovae. Supernova remnants. Neutron stars, pulsars and black holes. The periodic table of the elements and the stellar nucleosynthesis. Gas and dust in the Galaxy. Galaxies: morphological classification. The rotation of galaxies, mass and density. Photometry of galaxies: the distribution of stars. Formation of galaxies and their evolution. Processes of collision and merger between galaxies. Active galactic nuclei. Blacks holes and galactic quasars. Local Group of galaxies. The hierarchical structure of the universe. Expansion of the Universe and the Big Bang. Background radiation. Models of the Universe. Gravitation and cosmic mirages. Dark matter and dark energy.
