Prerequisites: Knowledge of cognitive and affective development in its typical and atypical trajectories, observational methods and psychological assessment.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide a knowledge of cognitive-behavioral interventions with particular focus on techniques and methods of treatment used in major disorders that occur during childhood and adolescence. We will go through the main interventions in a practical and experiential way, thus providing some basic skills in clinical psychology.
Examination methods: The final test is written (multiple choices, Clinical case's and setting's analysis).
Participation to practical activities and the evaluation of other compositions may be relevant to final evaluation (only if attended during the course).
Assessment criteria: Mark required to pass the exam is between 18 and 30 points.
The evaluation of practical activities gives up to 1 point, that will be added to the written mark, only if above 18 points.
Course unit contents: Cognitive-behavioral approach to developmental psychopathology:
Internalizing and externalizing problems
Psychological assessment
Psychosocial interventions
Cognitive interventions
Behavioral strategies based on reinforcement:
Behavioral contract
Parent training
Problem solving strategies
Social Skills Training
Behavioral activation
Relaxation training
Exposure to the feared situations
Treatment programs of the different psychopathologies of childhood and adolescence:
- Enuresis and encopresis
- Generalized anxiety and separation anxiety
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Depression
- Early psychosis
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course consists of frontal lectures, practical classes and clinical cases.
In small groups of about 6-7 people it is possible to visit services, mainly at the ULSS nr. 2 Marca Trevigiana, where clinical interventions take place.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The DSM-5 diagnostic classification included in the General and Developmental Psychopathology Program (Prof. Simonelli) is part of the program, and the material (slides and documents) on the Early Psychosis that will be used in lesson and made available on the Moodle platform
