Syllabus
Prerequisites: - basic knowledge of the psychic, cognitive and motor development of the normal child
- knowledge of medical-scientific terminology
Target skills and knowledge: The course is aimed at providing to the future psychologists the knowledge and elements of pediatric neuropsychiatry and pediatric neurology useful for a global approach to the child and his family. To know the main stages of the normal psychomotor development of the child in the first years of life and its deviations with the early signs of psychic and motor retardation; to know how to recognize and make the semiological description of epileptic seizures; to know the convulsive pathology, epilepsy and the main paroxysmal non-epileptic manifestations in the developmental age; to know the neurological manifestations and the internistic problems of children affected by infantile cerebral palsy and neurological disability; to know the main clinical manifestations and the diagnostic approach of various neurological pathologies (neuromuscular diseases causing floppy infusion, acute infections of the central nervous system, CNS diseases manifesting with acute ataxia, tuberous sclerosis); to know the semeiology of the main movement disorders; know the clinical presentation and how to diagnose the most frequent neuropsychiatric disorders including autism, ADHD syndrome, somatic conversions and transient visual disturbances.
Examination methods: written test (4 open-ended questions, duration 1 hour)
Assessment criteria: - acquisition of the contents presented in class;
- personal deepening on texts and articles provided and / or acquired by the student.
Course unit contents: 1. the normal psychomotor development of the child in the first years of life
2. the child with psychomotor retardation
3. the physiological development of language
4. delay and language disorders
5. neonatal neurology (neurological examination of the newborn, neonatal convulsions, the floppy infant)
6. intellectual disability and main neurogenic syndromes
7. infantile cerebral palsy
8. pain in the child with neurological disability
9. epileptic seizures and epilepsies
10. movement disorders
11. acute infections of the central nervous system
12. acute ataxia
13. somatic conversions and transient visual disturbances
14. autism
15. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: - frontal lessons with presentation of slides and videos of clinical cases
- interaction during the lesson with the students
-presentation of clinical cases with video and request for comments from the student
- work in small groups
