Prerequisites: Previous basic knowledge of dynamic psychology and clinical interviewing is useful.
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course is to give basic knowledge on psychodynamics of family relations, family life cycle, and theoretical approaches used in the work with families (systemic-relational approach, attachment-theory, and psychodynamic approach).
The skills to be acquired involve preparing and conducting clinical interviews with couples and families, using family assessment tools (self-report questionnaires and genograms), and developing and preparing in-depth family reports.
Examination methods: The exam includes a written examination conducted with computer and a practical examination. The written examination aims to verify the acquisition of knowledge and topics described in the textbooks.
The practical examination implies the conduction of a clinical interview and the use of self-report instruments with a couple or a family and, then, the preparation of a family report. The family report has to be uploaded in the Moodle site before attempting the written exam.
The practical examination must be carried out by both attending and non-attending students and must be completed and uploaded to Moodle before the written test is held (all information on this is on the Moodle course website, contact the teacher via email to get the password to access the Moodle site).
Assessment criteria: The final grade depends on two complementary aspects:
1) the assessment of the theoretical contents of the course through a written test on the computer, consisting of "true or false", "multiple choice" and / or "open" questions on the topics present in the textbooks (test written).
This aspect evaluates the completeness and correctness of the acquired knowledge.
2) The evaluation of a practical test, consisting in the realization of a family report, after having prepared and conducted clinical interview and applied some assessment tools to the family members.
This report will be evaluated considering in particular:
- the richness and correctness of the observations reported;
- the integration of these observations with the theoretical knowledge obtained from the course or from the scientific literature;
- the ability to describe analytically the elements present in the report;
- the ability to critically and circumstantially argue his observer's point of view;
- the terminological property used.
Course unit contents: Definition and fundamental concepts related to the couple and the family (normative development, developmental family tasks and goals, functional and dysfunctional families). The main theoretical approaches in working with families (systemic-relational approach and symbolic relational paradigm, attachment theory, psychodynamic approach). The phases of the family life cycle with particular reference to the couple, to the transition to parenting, to the family in the "adult" age, to the last transition and mourning. Communication and the pragmatics of communication. Family therapy and the model of Mara Selvini Palazzoli. The psychoanalytic mother-child therapy.
Observation and assessment of the couple and the family. The techniques of conducting the interview with the family. The genogram.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The teaching will consist, on the one hand, in lectures in which the theoretical topics will be presented and the knowledge and skills to be acquired will be illustrated. On the other hand, each week, videos presenting therapy sessions with a couple or family will be viewed and analyzed in detail in the class, with the active participation of the instruments. Practical exercises will also be carried out on the assessment tools to be used in the interview with the couple (or family) for the practical test.
Additional notes about suggested reading: For non-attending students, the written exam on the computer requires the full study of three mandatory reference texts. The student can integrate the preparation with the study of the slides made available by the teacher on the Moodle site. For attending students, the study program will be described in detail at the beginning of the course and any specific details will be agreed upon.
The material for the practice test, together with some sample protocols, can be found on the Moodle website of the course.
