Syllabus
Prerequisites: The student must have acquired the fundamental basics of: dynamic psychology, psychoanalytic diagnosis, psychodynamic diagnosis.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide students with theoretical and technical tools to understand how the phenomenon of the association highlights the existence of a link between a perception and a memory. This can reach the consciousness because it is connected to an affection. Clinical work with free associations and dreams allows us to rediscover at least a part of what has been lost or forgotten that is not present in the conscience, and thus it facilitates the care process. Based on this clinical work technique, the psychoanalytic interview favors the reconstruction of continuity in the experience of self. During the course a continuous dialogue between theory and clinical practice will be kept alive, and this will give the possibility to understand the differences between the phases of: consultation, process of analysis and conclusion of therapy. The stages of the interview will be observed both in the patient's perspective and in the psychoanalyst's perspective.
Examination methods: Oral exam
Assessment criteria: The assessment of the students’ learning will be based on understanding of the topics covered in the proposed texts.
Both the acquisition of theoretical concepts and clinical methodologies, and the ability to develop and apply the acquired skills in an autonomous, critical and conscious way will be considered.
Course unit contents: The first part of the course will present the use of the "Psychoanalytic Colloquium" in different settings (public and private, single and couple) and in different stages of patient's life. Specifically, the course will propose the study of the method of free associations (Bollas 1999), outlining how they lead to a deconstruction of the relationship, placing itself at the service of a subversive goal: mental evolution. The second part of the course proposes the study of dream as an election place to observe and analyse free associations, transversely to clinical context and patient life phase (child, adolescent, adult and elderly). Dreams interpretation "via regia" towards the unconscious is increasingly present in the clinical research landscape as it presents an unconscious, personal and shared territory, in which subjectivity is possible and psychic life is not anchored to external reality.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teaching consists mainly of lectures (Power Point presentations and videos). Group work, exercises on clinical material provided by teacher and analysis of clinical cases will be proposed. An active participation of students and the proposals for in-depth study of specific themes will be appreciated.
