Syllabus
Prerequisites: General knowledge of unit operations and chemical plant design
Target skills and knowledge: Risk Analysis in process industry (LM- Chemical and Insdutrial Processes Engineering)
The objective of the course is to give the basic knowledge of different aspects of plant and industrial processes safety, of risk prevention for workers, goods and environment. Methods for risk analysis evaluation in industrial activities, for system reliability, for area risk analysis and emergency management are given, referring to the current safety regulations.
Examination methods: Report on risk assessment in a simple process units
Oral examination
Assessment criteria: The evaluation of the preparation of the student will be based on an understanding of the topics covered in the lessons learned and the application of the methodology to simple practical examples.
Course unit contents: Basic comcepts
Concepts of risk due to severe accident, area risk and risk acceptability. Italian and European Legal framework . Concepts of social and individual risk. Qualitative and quantitative risk evaluation, limits of risk acceptability related to Italian and other Countries regulations. Role of public institutions.

* Principles of functional design of plants in the process industry and its schematisation

Safety Principles
Safety project: analysis of the main risk factors in industrial activities and analysis of the effectiveness of safety systems. Detection and measurement of risk factors. Individual and collective protection. References and criteria for establishing threshold values of damage to person, facilities, plants and environment.

Risk evaluation methodologies
Qualitative and quantitative methods for risk analysis (cognitive elements). First approach proceedings in risk analysis and evaluation.
Qualitative risk characterization methods (screening). Evaluation risk methods based on probability; identification and quantification of accidental sequences. Methods and instruments for risk assessment: Hazard Analysis, Hazop, What If, Fault Tree Analysis, FMEA. Human error: incidence evaluation. Criteria and models for estimating accidents consequences.
Methodologies for the analysis of explosive areas (ATEX), Methodology and analysis RBI (Risk Based Inspection).

Quantitative Area Risk Analysis (QARA)
Quantitative Area Risk Analysis and acceptability criteria, territory planning. Methods for area risk recomposition. Methods for risk evaluation in transports of dangerous goods. External emergency planning.

Major accidents: case history.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is conducted primarily through lectures.
Some hours are reserved for learning the use of simple computer codes for the evaluation of the consequences.

The execution of a work group (4-5 people) for the risk assessment in a simple process units, allows to verify the actual learning practical techniques of analysis illustrated in class.
