Target skills and knowledge: The Applied Acoustics Course is designed to provide the knowledge and skills to work in acoustics, whether in consultancy, local/central government or in research.
The aim of the Course is to enable students to formulate simple designs for noise control solutions and to emphasise the importance of considering noise control at the design stage rather than as a remedial process.
Examination methods: Students can choose between two options, similar for content and level of preparation required.
A) Written test. The exam consists of one or more numerical exercises, possibly integrated by theoretical questions. Numerical exercises concern: evaluation of the acoustic impact of sound sources in free or diffused fields; characterization of sound sources; evaluation of the acoustic characteristics of confined spaces, dimensioning of control systems for noise reduction.
B) Intermediate tests and oral final examination. The exam consists of the discussion of the reports developed on the basis of the activities carried out in group works in laboratory and independently during individual measurement experiences by means of acquisition software that can be used with personal equipments (smarphone or tablet).
For the access to "B" option, all laboratory activities are required.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation of the student's preparation will be based on the following points:
1) understanding of the course topics and completeness of the acquired knowledge;
2) property of technical terminology and conventions of expression of the parameters describing the acoustic phenomena;
3) ability of analytical description of the acoustic phenomena;
4) ability to apply autonomously and consciously the analysis and project tools for problem solving and case studies related to the different fields of the applied acoustics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods: A student who has met the objective of the course will be able to:
- take reliable measurements of environmental noise,
- apply acoustic theory and knowledge of standard practice,
- select appropriate noise control options for realistic environmental noise scenarios.
Teaching methods: lectures, classroom exercises, presentation methods of analysis and solution techniques (all teaching activities will be held in English).
