Syllabus
Prerequisites: None.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to supply the basic instrument for the analysis and modelling of geotechnical problems and with particular care to the modelling of soil response.
Examination methods: The exam will be written or oral and will concern the arguments presented in class.
Assessment criteria: The student preparation will be evaluated checking the comprehension of the arguments presented in the class and the ability to solve real problems related to the same arguments.
Course unit contents: Porous media mechanics: Classification of soils, rocks and rock masses; Physical state and stress state in porous media; Behaviour of soils and rocks in relation to solid-fluid interactions; Strength and stiffness of geomaterials; Simply and advanced constitutive models for geomaterials; State equations for porous media.
Methods for geotechnical analysis; Limit Equilibrium Methods; Numerical integration of state equations within the continuous and discontinuous approaches; Mesh-based and particle-based methods.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lessons in class, exercitations with numerical codes.
