Target skills and knowledge: knowledge of:
- basics on electric power static conversion by means of the most common converter typologies, taking into account the component non-idealities and the systems/networks they are connected to;
- converter impact on the mains;
- most common switching techniques and related features, limitations and drawbacks;
- resonant converter typologies with reference to the component electromagnetic stresses;
- switching supply configurations;
- devices for the electric power static conversion and their residential, industrial and electrical utility applications with reference to the probles due to various kinds of disturbances;
- applications for the exploitation of renewable sources and the distributed power generation.
Examination methods: Written test
Assessment criteria: Grade is assigned taking into account:
- knowledge of theory basics
- proficiency in application of analysis techniques
- ability to identify the most suitable converter topologies for specific applications
Course unit contents: Line frequency diode rectifiers: from AC line frequency to uncontrolled DC voltage
Line frequency phase controlled rectifiers and inverters: from AC line frequency to controlled DC voltage
DC-DC switch-mode converters
Switch-mode dc-ac inverters: from dc to sinusoidal ac
Resonant converters: zero-voltage and/or zero-current switching
Switching DC power supplies
Power conditioners and uninterruptible power supplies
Residential and industrial applications
Electric utility applications
Interconnection of renewable energy sources and energy storage systems to the utility grid
