Syllabus
Prerequisites: Thermodynamics and heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation)
Target skills and knowledge: The student should achieve:
- Knowledge of heat and mass transfer processes with humid air
- Knowledge of heat transfer processes in space
- Knowledge of fundamental aspects of spacecraft thermal control
Examination methods: Written test: problems and questions on the theory
Assessment criteria: Knowledge of the topics presented during the course
Course unit contents: Psychrometrics.
Thermodynamic properties of moist air. Diagrams (x-h, h-x). Typical processes.

Heat transfer.
Extended surfaces. Fin performance.
Heat transfer from combustion gases: carbon dioxide and water vapor.
Liquid and gas flow in microchannels for electronics cooling.
Heat transfer with phase change: condensation and vaporisation .

Thermal control in space
Heat fluxes in space. Spacecraft thermal enviroments (direct solar radiation, albedo, earth IR etc.).
Thermal surface finishes, multilayered insulation, heat pipes, thermoelectric coolers, phase change materials, louvers, pumped fluid loops.
Cryogenic systems. Thermal contact resistance. Radiators.
Thermal control of an aircraft cabin.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures based on handouts (lecture notes) previously provided to students.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Lecture notes.
Textbooks (and optional supplementary readings)
