Syllabus
Prerequisites: Fundamentals of polymeric materials, manufacturing processes, integrated CAD/CAE systems, design for manufacturing
Target skills and knowledge: Learn methods and techniques for the design of parts made of polymeric material, integrated to the design of the mold and the injection molding process.
Examination methods: Written examination and final colloquium.
The written test (60% of final mark) includes 6 open questions.
The colloquium (40% of final mark) consist in the discussion of the final project on the design of an injection molded part through numerical simulation
Assessment criteria: Continuous assessment durign lab, written exam and final colloquium.
Course unit contents: Introduction. The injection molding process. Design for injection molding and cost estimation. Mold design. In-line monitoring of the injection molding process. Quality management and statistical process control (SPC). Control charts and process capabilities. Design of experiments and process optimization. Numerical injection molding process simulation (Autodesk Moldflow).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: In addition to lectures in the classroom, the course includes 20 hours of simulation Laboratory. The use of the FEM methods will be implemented in a final project.
Moreover, there will be some hand-on experiments on the setup and the optimization of the injection molding process.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Additional material will be available online and it includes: handbook, scientific papers and slides.
