Prerequisites: Fundamentals of Structural Design 1 and 2.
Target skills and knowledge: Upon successful completion of this course, students will have a working knowledge of Timber building engineering and design, according to Italian and European design specifications.
Examination methods: Exam methods will be announced soon.
Course unit contents: - Properties of timber: anisotropy, moisture and long duration effects. Consequence of timber properties on structural analysis and detailing. Design standards for timber structures. Overview of glulam and manufactured wood products. Static and seismic design concepts within the limit design approach. Introduction to main timber construction technologies: frame structures and shear-wall platform frame or crossLam structures. Review of loading formulation: static and seismic loading. Design of structural members: beam, columns, floor diaphragms, shear walls, trusses. Traditional and modern connections: typologies and design. Analytical and numerical models for timber structures. Design, detailing and structural analysis of timber roof structures, buildings and bridges. Discussion of design examples.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will provide principles and procedures for Timber structures design and performance, according to the Italian and European standards.
As concerning the Timber Structures, this course covers the design of timber structures to Italian and European Standard Codes (EC5 and EC8), from theoretical aspects to design of realistic timber structures. The course will introduce students to a range of wood-based materials including timber, panel materials, glulam and crosslam. The anisotropic properties of the materials are presented and their dependencies on moisture content and loading duration. Students will become familiar with procedures for member design of the most common timber construction technologies, both for static and seismic loadings. Connection techniques and design details will be discussed. Examples will be presented from a range of buildings and practical calculation of members and joints will be presented. The course will be completed with an introduction to the latest research developments in multi-storey timber constructions.
Basic concepts for the fire resistance evaluation of structures will complete the course
The theoretical lessons will be completed by means of one/two technical visits to construction sites or manufacturing factories.
