Prerequisites: Geotechnics
Target skills and knowledge: This course supplies the geotechnical principles necessary for the design of foundations, in order to make the student able to choose, design and verify the optimum foundation solution in relation with the load typology, geotechnical properties of the subsoil, seismic characteristics of the area and settlements compatible with the over-structure use.
Examination methods: The exam will be written or oral and will concern the arguments presented and discussed in class.
Assessment criteria: The student preparation will be evaluated checking the comprehension of the arguments presented in the class and the ability to solve real problems related to the same arguments.
Course unit contents: Short review of soil mechanics and reconstruction of geotechnical model for foundation design; selection of soil properties from in-situ and laboratory tests.
Design within the Limit State Approach: National and European Code for constructions.
Shallow foundations: Bearing capacity in relation with load type, soil stratigraphy, geometry of over structures and site morphology.
Serviceable behavior of soil-foundation-structure system.
Design of foundation structures in reinforced concrete.
Deep foundations: material and executive technologies; vertical and horizontal bearing capacity of a single pile and pile group; Settlements of deep foundations; design of single pile structure and connections with other piles belong to the foundation structure. Load tests.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lessons in class, seminars from external experts.
