Syllabus
Prerequisites: Structural Analysis and Design
Target skills and knowledge: Acquisition of basic knowledge for the design of bridges and viaducts in relation to both technological and constructive aspects, design and calculation, taking into account also seismic actions. Evaluation of the degree of safety of existing bridge structures in relation to current operating conditions and design of strengthening and retrofit.
Examination methods: Oral exam
Assessment criteria: The evaluation of the preparation of the student will be based on an understanding of the arguments, on the acquisition of concepts and methodologies proposed and the ability to apply them in an autonomous and conscious way.
Course unit contents: RC and PRC bridges and viaducts, steel and composite bridges: typologies, static schemes, constructive methods, criteria of design. Standards; Schematization of static and dynamic actions.
Bridge deck: RC slabs, orthotropic slabs; longitudinal and transverse beams, models for calculation, distribution of loads. Bridges with closed cross-section: models for calculation. Supporting devices and joints. Piers and abutments, foundations: typologies, calculation criteria. Arch, cable-stayed and suspended bridges.
Bridges in the seismic areas: specific aspects of seismic design for bridge design, linear and nonlinear analyses, isolation and dissipation systems.
Existing bridges and viaducts: typologies and in service maintenance problems. Durability of bridges. Assessments of maintenance conditions, vulnerability (with particular reference to the seismic situation), repair and strengthening of existing bridges. Masonry arch bridges. Testing of bridges.
