Syllabus
Prerequisites: "Geotechnics"; "Analysis and Geotechnical modelling"
Target skills and knowledge: Staring from the basic of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnics, the main purpose of this course is to supply to the student the abilities for analysing and solving the principal geotechnical problems in the field of environmental protection.
Examination methods: The exam will be written or oral and will concern the arguments presented in class and developed within the personal exercitation and/or the laboratory activities.
Assessment criteria: The student preparation will be evaluated checking the comprehension of the arguments presented in the class and the ability to solve real problems related to the same arguments.
Course unit contents: Short review of soil mechanics.
Introduction to rock mechanics and basic features of the properties and behavior of rock masses in relation to the slope stability problems.
Slope stability: Types and causes of slope instabilities; effect of water; principal methods for the slope stability analysis in rock and soil; analysis of flowslide propagation; risk maps.
Slope monitoring: monitoring of displacements and pore water pressure; traditional and advanced methods.
Stabilization interventions: geomorphological modifications; drainages; active and passive reinforcements; national regulations.
Waste landfills: types; national and international regulations; hydrological balance; capillary barriers; permeability of soils and wastes; use of geosynthetics in landfills; design of bottom and lateral barriers and final capping; shear strength of wastes; internal stability analyses for landfills.
Subsidence: causes and effects; monitoring and control of subsidence.
Seismic geotechnics: basic principles of seismology and fault mechanics; earthquakes; micro/macro seismic mapping; dynamic soil/structures interaction; local seismic behavior and resonance; main regulation for seismic geotechnics; theoretical and numerical analysis of seismic behavior of geotechnical structures.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lessons in class, seminars from external experts, laboratory exercitations in groups.
