Syllabus
Prerequisites: Geotechnics, Construction technique
Target skills and knowledge: To lead the student towards the modern constructive techniques of underground works, in relation to the nature of the medium and the geomechanical conditions of the subsoil. The design of retaining structures will be also carried out, very widespread in tunneling and underground works.
Examination methods: For both in-course and out-of-course students, the exam is preceded by several revisions of the project assigned to the study group or to the individual student.
The oral exam includes the discussion of the project and the verification of the knowledge of the course contents.
Assessment criteria: During the oral examination of both in-course and out-of-course students, it will be assessed the knowledge of the course contents, the clarity of the exposition and the technical maturity in dealing with the complex executive planning of the assigned work.
Course unit contents: Types of underground structures: galleries, caverns, wells.
Geomechanical characterization of the soil mass: geological reconnaissance, geophysical surveys, in site and in laboratory geotechnical surveys, pilot tunnel.
Tunnel excavation technologies: excavation methods, digging in loose soil, digging in rocks, digging into rigid formations, operating machines, and organizing the building yard.
Stress and deformation in the soil mass: lithostatic state of stress and induced by tectonic processes, stress and deformation states around circular and elliptical cavities, stress and deformation states near the front.
Earth-structure interaction: characteristic lines of cavity and of supports in relation to ground strength criterion.
Supports and reinforcements: first and second support stage, pre-consolidation.
Monitoring and control: instrumentation for control during construction and in service.
Types of earth retaining structures: retaining structures and their construction modalities depending on the geotechnical conditions of the soil.
Rigid support works: gravity walls, on piles, on micropiles and with ties, construction procedures, stability and structural checks.
Flexible support works: cantilevered diaphragms, simple anchorage and many anchors, constructive procedures, stability, structural checks and influence of neutral pressures.
Composite support structures: reinforced ground, tired walls, plating, ground nailing.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: A project will be planned.
