Syllabus
Prerequisites: It is obligatory to have passed the first written exam in practical Slovene.
Target skills and knowledge: This course, with the title "An Introduction to Slovene Grammar", consists of a systematical presentation of the grammar of comtemporary literary Slovene. The various levels of structuralistic linguistic analysis will be observed.
Examination methods: The exam will be oral and will last about 20 minutes. It takes the form of a discussion of one or more points touched upon during the lectures. The student will be specifically asked to illustrate the grammatical categories expressed in Slovene morphology. At least one question will deal with the relation between Slovene phonology and orthography.
Assessment criteria: For the evaluation the following criteria obtain:
1) knowledge on the subject presented during the lectures;
2) knowledge and understanding of the concepts and methods discussed;
3) the capability to apply this knowledge in an autonomous and conscient way
4) logical discourse capability, that is the student's answers should be pertinent with respect to the questions; he should be able to develop 'a critical discourse of his own' that is pertinent, clear, effective and personal.
Course unit contents: During the course the following themes will be discussed:
1) the position of Slovene among the Slavic languages;
2) the phonetics, phonology and orthography of literary Slovene;
3) morphophonology as a prerequisite for morphological analysis;
4) the morphology of the inflected parts of speech;
5) notes on syntax.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The lectures intend to let the students participate and to elicit discussion, among others by comparison with grammatical characteristics of other languages, Slavic as well as non-Slavic. In order to consolidate the acquired knowledge examples from real-world texts will be used, ie. that have not been produced specifically for didactic purposes. Presence at the lectures is highly desirable.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The material for the course will be uploaded in Moodle
